The Ridge & Mall Road

The open Ridge and the pedestrian Mall are the heart of Shimla — Christ Church (the second-oldest in North India), the Gaiety Theatre, Scandal Point and the town’s best evening stroll. Everything here is on foot; no vehicles on the Mall.

Snow and pines at Kufri near Shimla

Jakhu Temple & Kufri

Jakhu Hill — Shimla’s highest point — has the Hanuman temple and a giant statue reached by a steep walk or ropeway (mind the monkeys). Kufri, about 15 km out, is the classic short excursion for views, a small adventure park and winter snow.

Nek Chand’s Rock Garden, Chandigarh — a common start point for Shimla

Viceregal Lodge & Chadwick Falls

The Indian Institute of Advanced Study (the old Viceregal Lodge) is a grand colonial estate open for guided tours. Chadwick Falls and the Glen are quieter green escapes a short drive from the centre.

The Kalka–Shimla toy train

The UNESCO-listed narrow-gauge railway from Kalka to Shimla is an experience in itself — 100+ tunnels and sweeping curves. It’s also the most scenic way to arrive if you’re coming by rail.
